Dubai court acquits Syrian of raping Pinay

A court in Dubai has cleared a Syrian accused of raping a 26-year-old Filipino worker who failed to substantiate her allegation. The Dubai Court of Appeal acquitted the Syrian identified only as N.T. after the alleged rape victim, known as A.S., gave a "patchy" statement and "fabricated the incident by claiming that she got raped while ironing his clothes," according to a report in Gulf News. However, the court ordered the Syrian to spend six months in jail for impersonating police personnel. He was also fined Dh2,000 for drinking alcohol and defaming the claimant. He will be deported after serving his term. Earlier, the Dubai Court of First Instance acquitted N.T. of raping A.S. after his lawyer convinced the court that the victim gave inconsistent testimony. Gulf News said A.S. told the court that "the defendant told me that he loved me and would like to have an affair with me, but I told him that I trusted him and considered him a brother. Then he undressed and raped me." The lawyer told the court the medical report proved there was no evidence of violence against A.S. The Syrian denied the rape charges. - GMANews.TV
